1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage multiple urgent tax deadlines simultaneously

During January filing season, I had 12 complex personal tax returns due within 3 days, including 4 non-domiciled clients requiring detailed calculations. I created a priority matrix based on complexity and client importance, then allocated 2 straightforward returns to junior colleagues with clear review checkpoints. I tackled the 4 most complex cases first, working systematically through residency calculations and foreign income computations. By front-loading the difficult work and delegating appropriately, I delivered all 12 returns on time with zero technical queries from HMRC, whilst ensuring junior staff gained valuable experience under proper supervision.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified a complex tax issue and how you resolved it

While reviewing a client's draft return, I noticed inconsistencies in their overseas income reporting that suggested potential double taxation relief claims worth £15,000. The client had worked in Germany for 8 months but hadn't claimed treaty relief. I researched the UK-Germany double tax treaty provisions, calculated the available relief, and prepared supporting documentation. I then explained the technical position to the client in plain English, showing how the treaty protected them from double taxation. The result was £15,000 in tax savings and a delighted client who referred 2 colleagues to our practice.
