Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Highlight your QTS qualification and any experience teaching KS3 and KS4 PE prominently at the top of your CV, as the advert explicitly requires coverage of both key stages.

3

🎯 Mention any PSHE teaching experience explicitly, as the role includes KS3 PSHE delivery — even brief or cross-curricular PSHE experience is worth noting.

4

🏫 Reference any independent or fee-paying school experience on your CV, as this is an independent secondary school and familiarity with that environment is an advantage.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you quickly built a positive relationship with a new class or school as a supply or cover teacher.

Situation: I joined a Year 9 PE group mid-term at a secondary school in Wirral with no handover notes from the previous teacher. Task: I needed to establish credibility and routine with 28 students within the first lesson. Action: I introduced a structured warm-up activity the students could lead themselves, which gave me 10 minutes to observe group dynamics and learn names. I then set clear expectations and linked the lesson to their upcoming assessment criteria. Result: By the end of week two, the head of PE noted that the group's lesson engagement had improved from roughly 60% to over 85%, and I was asked to extend the placement by four weeks.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt a lesson plan at short notice — what did you do and what was the outcome?

Situation: I arrived at school on a wet Tuesday morning to find the outdoor pitches were waterlogged and my planned KS4 football assessment was impossible to run. Task: I had 30 students, a sports hall, and 10 minutes to redesign the lesson. Action: I pivoted to a tactical decision-making workshop using video clips and whiteboard diagrams, asking students to analyse formations and justify their choices — directly linked to the written component of their GCSE PE coursework. Result: Three students who had been disengaged outdoors contributed actively to the discussion, and the class teacher noted it was the strongest theoretical lesson the group had received that term.
