1Question

Tell me about a time you inspired a reluctant student to engage with sport

I had a Year 9 student who consistently avoided PE lessons due to low confidence in team sports. I identified her interest in dance through casual conversation and created a personalised fitness programme incorporating dance-based warm-ups and movement patterns. Over 8 weeks, I gradually introduced team elements through dance-sport activities. She began attending voluntary lunchtime sessions and eventually joined the school dance team. By year end, her fitness scores improved by 40% and she chose GCSE PE as an option. This taught me the importance of finding individual pathways to engagement rather than applying one-size-fits-all approaches.
2Question

How do you balance competitive excellence with inclusive participation in your teaching?

When coaching our school basketball team, I implemented a tiered training system. Advanced players attended intensive 3-hour weekend sessions focusing on tactical development and competition preparation. Meanwhile, I ran parallel recreational sessions for all abilities, using modified rules and mixed-ability teams. I created pathway opportunities where recreational players could progress to competitive squads through skills assessments every half-term. This resulted in our A-team reaching county semi-finals while recreational participation increased by 65%. The key was maintaining high standards for elite performers while ensuring every student felt valued and had clear progression routes.
