1Question

Tell me about a time you had to mentor an underperforming paraplanner

I had a junior paraplanner who was struggling with pension transfer calculations, producing reports with 15% error rates. I implemented a structured mentoring programme with weekly one-to-ones, paired them with our strongest technical specialist, and created practice scenarios using real anonymised cases. Within 8 weeks, their accuracy improved to 96% and they successfully completed their Level 4 modules. This experience taught me the importance of tailored development plans and regular feedback loops in building technical competence.
2Question

How have you handled competing priorities when managing team workloads?

During a particularly busy period, we had 85 suitability reports due within 2 weeks while onboarding 2 new team members. I created a priority matrix based on client urgency and case complexity, redistributed 12 simpler cases to senior paraplanners, and arranged temporary support from another department. I also negotiated 48-hour extensions on 8 non-critical cases with advisers. We delivered all reports on time with 98% accuracy, and the new starters felt supported rather than overwhelmed by their introduction to the team.
