1Question

Tell me about a time you had to deliver difficult news to a patient about their eye health

A 58-year-old patient came for a routine check, but OCT scans revealed early glaucoma signs. I scheduled a private consultation room and explained the condition using visual aids, emphasising that early detection meant excellent treatment prospects. I arranged urgent referral to ophthalmology within 2 weeks and provided written information. The patient initially felt anxious but appreciated my thorough explanation and follow-up call. Six months later, their condition was well-managed with drops, and they thanked me for the careful approach that preserved their vision.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work with a challenging patient

An elderly gentleman became frustrated during refraction testing, claiming his vision was fine and the test was unnecessary. I acknowledged his concerns and explained each step's purpose, relating findings to his daily activities like reading. I adjusted my pace, used larger test charts, and took breaks when needed. By connecting the examination to his hobby of woodworking, he understood why precise vision correction mattered. The appointment took 45 minutes instead of 30, but he left satisfied with new glasses and booked his next appointment before leaving.
