Dear Hiring Manager,

Specsavers' reputation as a home visits pioneer makes this Domiciliary Optometrist role in Boston exactly the career direction I want to pursue. As a GOC registered Optometrist with experience in patient-centred care, I am particularly drawn to the opportunity to deliver high-standard clinical eyecare directly to patients' homes across Lincolnshire.

My background in community optometry has equipped me with the confidence and strong work ethic essential for independent domiciliary practice. I understand the importance of adapting clinical procedures for home environments while maintaining the highest standards of patient care and safety.

1Question

Tell me about a time when you had to build rapport with a difficult or anxious patient

I encountered an elderly patient with dementia who became distressed during a routine eye examination, repeatedly asking to leave. I recognised that my usual clinical approach wasn't working, so I took time to sit at her level, spoke in calm, reassuring tones, and involved her daughter in explaining each step. I adapted the examination sequence, taking breaks when needed and using familiar objects to help her focus. By the end of the 45-minute appointment, she was smiling and thanked me for being patient. This experience taught me the importance of flexibility and empathy in patient care, particularly with vulnerable populations.
2Question

Give an example of when you went above and beyond for a customer

A regular patient mentioned struggling with night driving after cataract surgery but couldn't afford new prescription glasses immediately. Rather than simply booking a follow-up, I researched local charitable schemes and found she qualified for assistance through a vision care charity. I completed her application forms, liaised with the charity directly, and arranged for her new glasses to be ready within 2 weeks instead of the usual 8-week wait. She was able to resume driving safely, and her family wrote a letter of appreciation to our practice manager. Going beyond the clinical consultation to address her broader needs demonstrated genuine customer care.
