STAR answer examples

1Question

Describe a time when you successfully re-engaged a dormant client account

I inherited a territory where a major electrical contractor had stopped ordering for 8 months due to pricing concerns. I arranged a site visit to understand their current projects and discovered they were struggling with LED retrofit specifications for a 200-unit housing development. I worked with our technical team to create a bespoke lighting solution that reduced their installation time by 30% while meeting their budget constraints. This approach not only secured the £45k housing contract but re-established them as a regular customer, generating £120k in additional business over the following year.
2Question

How do you prioritise your time when managing a large regional territory?

I segment my territory by customer value and growth potential, using a matrix approach. High-value existing customers get monthly face-to-face visits, while emerging prospects receive quarterly technical consultations. I dedicate Mondays to account planning and internal coordination, Tuesday-Thursday for customer visits across the region, and Fridays for follow-up calls and proposal preparation. This system helped me maintain 95% customer retention while developing 15 new accounts worth £280k in my previous role. I also use CRM data to identify seasonal patterns, ensuring I'm present during key specification periods.
