Letter preview — tailored to Howdens Joinery

Dear Hiring Manager,

Howdens Joinery's reputation as the UK's number one trade kitchen supplier — backed by a £2.4 billion turnover and 950+ depots — makes the Kitchen Sales Designer role in Llandudno exactly the environment in which I want to develop my sales career. My track record of exceeding sales targets and building trusted relationships with trade customers aligns directly with the commercially minded approach Howdens requires.

My background in trade or retail sales has equipped me with the ability to manage multiple customer projects simultaneously, conduct consultative home visits, and negotiate confidently while protecting margin. I am comfortable working to KPIs and thrive when given clear performance goals. Although I am prepared to complete the Ready to Trade CAD programme, I bring a strong eye for design and a practical understanding of how to translate a client brief into a workable, inspiring kitchen layout.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you exceeded a sales target — what actions did you take to achieve it?

Situation: In my previous role at a trade building materials supplier, our depot was 12% behind its quarterly revenue target with six weeks remaining. Task: As the lead sales contact for 35 active trade accounts, I was responsible for closing the gap. Action: I ran a targeted outreach campaign across my accounts, offering design consultations and flagging a new product range arriving that quarter. I also followed up on 18 lapsed quotes that had gone cold. Result: I personally closed £47,000 in additional orders over those six weeks, helping the depot finish 4% above target. Three of the lapsed-quote customers became regular repeat accounts the following quarter.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to balance achieving a sale with protecting profitability. What did you decide?

Situation: A long-standing trade customer requested a 15% discount on a full kitchen order worth £9,200, threatening to go to a competitor. Task: I needed to retain the sale without eroding the depot's margin below the 30% floor set by management. Action: Rather than discounting the headline price, I offered an upgraded handle pack at cost and prioritised their delivery slot, which had genuine value to them as they were on a tight build schedule. I held the core price firm and explained the margin rationale professionally. Result: The customer accepted the revised offer, the sale completed at 31% margin, and they placed two further orders within eight weeks.
