1Question

Tell me about a time you went the extra mile for a patient

An elderly patient in Lincoln was struggling with new varifocals and couldn't return to the practice due to mobility issues. Rather than suggesting they manage, I arranged an additional home visit outside my scheduled rounds. I spent 45 minutes adjusting the frames and providing detailed guidance on adaptation techniques. The patient's confidence improved dramatically, and they later referred 3 family members to our service. This reinforced my belief that exceptional patient care often requires going beyond standard protocols.
2Question

How do you handle challenging or anxious patients during examinations?

I encountered a patient with severe anxiety about eye examinations following a previous traumatic experience. I began by explaining each step before proceeding and allowed them to control the pace. I used portable equipment that felt less intimidating than traditional machinery and maintained constant verbal reassurance. By the end of the 90-minute appointment, they had completed a full examination and expressed gratitude for the patient approach. This experience taught me that adapting my communication style is crucial for successful domiciliary care.
