Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Place your Cat C / HGV Class 2 licence details (issue date, expiry, and any endorsements) at the very top of your CV under a 'Licences & Certifications' section — the advert lists this as the first hard requirement.

2

📊 Quantify your driving experience: e.g. 'Completed 25+ daily multi-drop deliveries across Suffolk, maintaining a 99% on-time delivery rate over 3 years.'

3

🎯 Highlight manual handling experience explicitly, as the advert specifies 'ability to carry out manual deliveries' — mention weight limits you regularly handled (e.g. 'Unloaded pallets up to 500kg using pump trucks').

4

🤝 Include a short line about customer relationship-building, as the advert emphasises serving 'regular customers' — reference any repeat-route or account-based delivery work you have done.

5

📋 Mention accuracy in delivery paperwork and compliance (e.g. tachograph records, POD signatures) as the advert explicitly requires paperwork completion — this differentiates you from candidates who focus only on driving hours.

Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Booker Wholesale's HGV Class 2 Driver position in Ipswich is a strong match for my background in Cat C vehicle operation and multi-drop delivery driving. With over three years of experience completing daily deliveries to trade and retail customers, I understand the importance of accurate paperwork, safe manual handling, and maintaining a professional service on every drop.

My background in delivery driving includes operating 18-tonne vehicles on local and regional routes, conducting pre-shift vehicle safety checks, and managing tachograph compliance throughout each shift. I have consistently built positive relationships with regular customers on fixed routes, ensuring on-time delivery and resolving any issues calmly and efficiently on the day.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult or unhappy customer during a delivery — what happened and how did you handle it?

Situation: I was delivering chilled stock to a busy café in Norwich and arrived 20 minutes late due to a road closure. The owner was frustrated as they were preparing for the lunchtime rush. Task: I needed to complete the delivery quickly and restore the customer's confidence without cutting corners on safety. Action: I apologised clearly, explained the road closure, and immediately began unloading in the most efficient sequence so their priority items came off first. I also called my depot to log the delay accurately on the paperwork. Result: The owner thanked me at the end and mentioned it to my manager in a positive call that week. The route stayed on my regular schedule for the following 18 months.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified a problem with your vehicle or load before setting off — what did you do?

Situation: During my pre-shift walkaround at 05:30, I noticed the nearside rear tyre on my 18-tonne rigid was significantly under-inflated — below the minimum safe pressure for a loaded run. Task: I had 22 drops scheduled and the vehicle was already loaded with ambient grocery stock. Action: I immediately reported the fault to the transport supervisor, completed a written defect report, and refused to take the vehicle out. A replacement vehicle was sourced within 40 minutes and I transferred the paperwork across. Result: The route ran only 35 minutes behind schedule, all deliveries were completed, and the original vehicle was taken off the road for tyre replacement — avoiding a potential blowout on the A14.
