STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult customer during a delivery

Situation: I arrived at a restaurant for a scheduled food delivery, but the manager claimed they hadn't ordered several items worth £240. Task: I needed to resolve the discrepancy while maintaining good customer relations and ensuring accurate delivery. Action: I calmly reviewed the delivery paperwork with the manager, cross-referenced their original order, and discovered a communication gap between their day and night staff. I contacted our dispatch team to verify the order details and offered to return the disputed items if needed. Result: The manager appreciated my professional approach and confirmed the order was correct. This strengthened our relationship, and they specifically requested me for future deliveries, leading to 15% faster unloading times at their location.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work under pressure to meet delivery deadlines

Situation: During a particularly busy Friday, I had 12 deliveries scheduled but encountered a 90-minute traffic delay due to roadworks on my main route. Task: I needed to complete all deliveries before customer closing times while maintaining safety standards. Action: I immediately contacted dispatch to inform them of the delay, then used my local knowledge to plan alternative routes. I called ahead to customers to update them on revised delivery times and prioritised time-sensitive deliveries like fresh produce. I also streamlined my unloading process by pre-sorting items during brief stops. Result: I successfully completed all 12 deliveries with only 20 minutes average delay per customer. Three customers specifically thanked me for the advance communication, and my proactive approach was recognised by management with a performance commendation.
