Dear Hiring Manager,

Booker's reputation as the UK's leading food and drink wholesaler, combined with this 18T Delivery Driver role based in Ipswich, is exactly the kind of local, customer-focused driving position I have been seeking. I hold a full Cat C licence with an up-to-date CPC card, and bring over three years of delivery driving experience including stock loading, accurate paperwork completion, and building strong relationships with regular customers on established routes.

My background in commercial delivery driving has given me a solid grounding in vehicle safety checks, tachograph compliance, and manual handling procedures. I am comfortable working an Any 5 from 7 shift pattern including weekends, and I am keen to take on overtime opportunities as the business requires.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult or unhappy customer during a delivery — what did you do?

Situation: While delivering chilled wholesale stock to a busy independent convenience store, the owner was frustrated because two items on the order were short-picked at the depot and he had a lunchtime rush approaching. Task: I needed to resolve his concern quickly, maintain the delivery schedule for my remaining 14 drops, and ensure the issue was logged correctly. Action: I calmly acknowledged the problem, showed him the signed delivery note confirming the shortage originated at the depot, and called the branch supervisor immediately to arrange a same-day top-up run. I also helped him prioritise unloading the items he did receive so his shelves were stocked before the rush. Result: He thanked me personally, the top-up was delivered within two hours, and he remained a regular customer on my route for the following 18 months.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt your route or schedule at short notice. How did you handle it?

Situation: Midway through a 20-drop delivery run, I received a radio message that a road closure due to a gas leak had blocked my planned route through the town centre, affecting 6 of my remaining deliveries. Task: I needed to replan on the fly to avoid missing delivery windows and keep customers informed. Action: I pulled over safely, used my knowledge of the local area to identify two alternative routes, and contacted the depot to flag the delay. I then prioritised the two time-critical restaurant customers first, rerouting through a bypass that added only 12 minutes to my total run. Result: All 20 deliveries were completed within the agreed windows, and the depot supervisor noted my proactive communication in my end-of-day debrief.
