1Question

Tell me about a time you had to build rapport with a nervous patient in their home

An 82-year-old gentleman was extremely anxious about his first hearing assessment, having postponed it for 3 years. I arrived early to chat over tea, explaining each step before proceeding. I demonstrated the equipment on myself first and shared stories of other patients who had similar concerns. By taking 20 extra minutes to build trust, he relaxed completely and even asked his wife to book her assessment too. This approach resulted in a successful fitting and a referral that brought 3 new patients to our service.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to explain complex hearing aid technology to an elderly patient

A 75-year-old retired teacher was overwhelmed by digital hearing aid features and connectivity options. I used simple analogies, comparing Bluetooth connectivity to her cordless phone and automatic volume adjustment to her car's cruise control. I created a one-page visual guide with large text showing the 3 essential functions she needed daily. After 2 follow-up visits for practice, she mastered the technology and reported 90% improvement in family conversations, leading to her recommending our service to 5 friends.
