STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to build rapport with a nervous patient during a home visit

I visited an 82-year-old gentleman who was anxious about his first hearing assessment. He was worried about the cost and effectiveness of hearing aids. I spent 15 minutes before the assessment discussing his concerns, explaining each step of the process, and sharing success stories from similar patients. I demonstrated the hearing aid technology using simple analogies he could relate to. By the end of the visit, he was comfortable enough to proceed with the fitting. Three weeks later, he called to thank me, saying the hearing aids had transformed his ability to communicate with his family. This experience reinforced the importance of patience and clear communication in building trust during home visits.
2Question

How do you handle a situation where a patient is unhappy with their hearing aid recommendation?

A patient expressed dissatisfaction with my recommendation for behind-the-ear hearing aids, preferring invisible options despite her severe hearing loss. I listened to her concerns about appearance and social confidence, then arranged a follow-up appointment to demonstrate different models. I brought three alternative options, including a smaller receiver-in-canal model that offered a compromise between discretion and performance. I explained the technical limitations honestly but focused on finding a solution that met both her hearing needs and lifestyle preferences. She chose the compromise option and reported 90% satisfaction at her 6-week review. The key was validating her concerns while providing professional guidance based on clinical evidence.
