STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to approach strangers and engage them in conversation

During a community fundraising event, I needed to approach 200+ visitors to explain our charity's work and encourage donations. Initially, many people seemed hesitant to stop and chat. I developed a friendly, non-intrusive approach by making eye contact, smiling, and starting with a simple question about their day. I learned to read body language quickly and respect when someone wasn't interested. By the end of the day, I had meaningful conversations with 180 people and secured £1,200 in donations. This experience taught me the importance of being approachable yet respectful when engaging strangers.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work flexibly around changing schedules

In my previous role, our team's schedule changed weekly based on client demands, sometimes with just 24 hours' notice. One week, I was scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday shifts, but urgent research requirements meant switching to weekend work covering 3 different locations. I reorganised my personal commitments, coordinated with family members for childcare, and ensured I had transport arranged for each location. I completed all assigned tasks on time and maintained quality standards despite the schedule changes. This experience showed me how flexibility and good planning can turn challenging situations into opportunities.
