STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Describe a time when you had to approach strangers to gather information

During a community event, I was tasked with gathering feedback about local services from 50 residents. Initially, people seemed hesitant to engage, so I developed a friendly opening approach explaining the purpose and time commitment. I positioned myself near the refreshment area where people were more relaxed and used open body language. By the end of the day, I had collected 47 completed surveys with detailed feedback, exceeding the target by 94%. The key was making people feel comfortable and explaining how their input would make a real difference to local services.
2Question

How would you handle a passenger who refuses to participate in the survey?

I would politely thank them for their time and respect their decision immediately. For example, when conducting customer feedback at a retail store, I encountered someone who declined to participate. I smiled, said 'No problem at all, thank you anyway' and moved on to the next person. This approach maintained a positive atmosphere and actually led to 3 other customers volunteering to participate after seeing how respectfully I handled the refusal. I understand that participation is voluntary and maintaining goodwill is more important than any single survey response.
