STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to approach strangers and engage them in conversation

While volunteering at a local charity event, I was tasked with approaching visitors to gather feedback about the services offered. Initially, I felt nervous about interrupting people's day, but I developed a friendly opening approach that put people at ease. I approached over 80 visitors during the 4-hour event, starting conversations by acknowledging their time was valuable and explaining how their input would help improve future services. By the end, I had collected detailed feedback from 67 people, with many commenting on how comfortable I made them feel. This experience taught me that genuine interest in people's opinions and respectful communication can overcome initial hesitation from both sides.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work independently with minimal supervision

During a temporary retail position, I was assigned to manage the weekend stock-taking process for a 2,000-item inventory while the manager was away. I had to plan my approach, prioritise sections by sales volume, and troubleshoot discrepancies without immediate support. I created a systematic checking process, working through 15 product categories over 8 hours, and identified £1,200 worth of missing stock that had been incorrectly recorded. I documented all findings and presented a clear report to management on Monday morning. This experience demonstrated my ability to stay focused, solve problems independently, and deliver reliable results without constant oversight.
