STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to approach strangers in a professional capacity

During a community event, I was tasked with gathering feedback from 50 attendees about the venue facilities. Initially, people seemed hesitant to engage, so I developed a friendly opening approach by commenting on the event first before introducing the survey. I explained the purpose clearly and kept questions brief, which helped put people at ease. By the end of the 4-hour event, I had successfully completed 47 surveys with detailed feedback. The venue manager later used this data to make improvements for future events, and several respondents commented positively on my professional yet approachable manner.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work independently with minimal supervision

I was assigned to manage a weekend information booth at a shopping centre with no direct supervision for 8 hours. I had to handle visitor inquiries, distribute promotional materials, and track engagement metrics independently. When the promotional materials ran low after 3 hours, I contacted the main office and arranged for additional supplies while maintaining the booth's operation. I created a simple tally system to accurately record 180 visitor interactions and provided a comprehensive report at the end of the shift. My manager praised my initiative and accuracy, leading to regular weekend assignments.
