Dear Hiring Manager,

Ipsos's field market research programme for public transport improvement aligns perfectly with my interest in community engagement and flexible working. Your requirement for face-to-face interviewing skills and full driving licence matches my background in customer-facing roles and mobile work capabilities.

My background in engaging with diverse members of the public and conducting structured conversations would translate well to approaching bus passengers and gathering their transport experiences. I am comfortable working independently and adapting to different locations across Bournemouth's bus network.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to approach strangers in a professional capacity

During my retail role, I was tasked with conducting customer satisfaction surveys at our store entrance. Initially, I found it challenging as many customers were in a hurry. I developed an approach where I would smile, make eye contact, and briefly explain the survey's purpose in 10 seconds. I positioned myself strategically near the entrance and chose moments when customers appeared less rushed. Over 2 weeks, I successfully approached 180 customers and achieved a 75% participation rate. The feedback we gathered led to improved store layout changes that increased customer satisfaction scores by 15%.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work flexibly around changing schedules

In my previous role, our team faced unexpected staff shortages during peak season, requiring me to adapt to constantly changing shift patterns. Rather than viewing this as a problem, I created a personal availability tracker and communicated my flexibility to management. I covered 12 additional shifts across 4 weeks, working different locations and times. I maintained detailed handover notes to ensure continuity and kept my manager updated on my availability daily. This flexibility helped the team maintain service levels, and I received recognition for my adaptability and reliability during the challenging period.
