Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Lead with your EL/PL pre-litigation experience in your Personal Statement — the advert explicitly requires a minimum of 18 months, so state your exact duration (e.g. '2 years managing pre-litigation EL/PL caseloads') in the first two lines.

2

📊 Quantify your caseload: e.g. 'Managed a live caseload of 120+ pre-litigation EL/PL files, achieving 95% on-time resolution within SLA targets' — the advert emphasises a process-driven team, so metrics signal fit.

3

🎯 Mention any retail claims experience explicitly if you have it — the advert flags this as advantageous, so even a brief line ('Handled 30+ retail public liability claims for high-street clients') will differentiate your CV.

4

🖥️ Name the specific case management system(s) you have used (e.g. Proclaim, Eclipse, Visualfiles) — the advert calls out 'case management experience' as a requirement and naming the software signals immediate competency.

5

🤝 Tailor your CV's key achievements section to the defendant insurance context — highlight experience working for defendant-side firms or insurers rather than claimant-side, as the role sits within a Defendant Insurance team.

Dear Hiring Manager,

Harkaye Core Talent's search for a Pre-Litigation EL/PL Claims Handler at a leading Yorkshire law firm caught my attention immediately. With hands-on experience managing pre-litigation Employer's Liability and Public Liability caseloads and a proven track record using case management systems within a defendant insurance context, I am confident I can contribute to the team from day one.

My background in pre-litigation EL/PL claims handling has equipped me with the methodical approach and caseload discipline this role demands. I have consistently managed high volumes of defendant-side files, applying the Pre-Action Protocol for Low Value PI claims and maintaining strong service standards throughout. I have also handled retail liability matters, which I understand would be advantageous in this position.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you managed a particularly complex or high-volume caseload — how did you prioritise and what was the outcome?

Situation: At my previous firm, a colleague left unexpectedly and I absorbed an additional 45 pre-litigation EL files on top of my existing caseload of 110, bringing my total to 155 active matters. Task: I needed to ensure no file breached protocol deadlines while maintaining quality across all defendant instructions. Action: I categorised every file by next action date and liability complexity, tackled the 30 most time-critical files first each morning, and used Proclaim's task-flagging feature to automate daily reminders. I also communicated proactively with the supervising solicitor to flag three files requiring early reserve review. Result: Over the following six weeks, I met 100% of CNF response deadlines, closed 28 files, and received written commendation from the team manager for maintaining service standards under pressure.
2Question

Describe a situation where you identified an error or inconsistency in a claim file. What did you do and what did you learn?

Situation: While reviewing a Public Liability retail claim, I noticed the incident date recorded on the CNF portal differed by three days from the date on the insurer's internal accident log. Task: The discrepancy could have undermined the defendant's position if unchallenged, so I needed to resolve it before the liability response deadline. Action: I contacted the retail client's health and safety team directly, obtained the original CCTV log and store incident report, and confirmed the correct date. I then updated the file, noted the audit trail, and flagged the issue to my supervisor with a recommendation to tighten the client's initial reporting process. Result: The correct date was submitted within protocol, the claim was successfully defended on liability, and the client introduced a revised incident-reporting checklist — reducing similar discrepancies by roughly 80% over the next quarter.
