Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Lead with your MEWP and EWP experience prominently in your Personal Statement — the advert lists MEWP, boom lifts, scissor lifts, and telehandlers as core equipment, so name each type you have worked on.

2

📊 Quantify your maintenance history: e.g. 'Serviced fleet of 30+ diesel-powered MEWPs, reducing unplanned downtime by 25% over 12 months' to demonstrate scale of experience.

3

🔧 List specific diagnostic tools and software you have used (e.g. OEM diagnostic platforms, CANbus tools) as the advert explicitly requires computer-based diagnostic capability.

4

🌐 If you hold any relevant Australian or internationally recognised certifications (e.g. NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance, forklift licence, IPAF card), include them clearly — the advert values international industry credentials.

5

🎯 Include a dedicated 'Equipment Experience' section listing every machine type (boom lifts, scissor lifts, telehandlers, generators, lighting towers) to pass ATS screening for this equipment-specific role.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you identified a safety hazard during routine maintenance and how you handled it.

Situation: During a scheduled service on a 17-metre boom lift at a construction hire depot, I noticed hydraulic hose wear that was not yet flagging on the diagnostic system. Task: My responsibility was to complete the service and return the machine to the hire fleet within the day. Action: I immediately quarantined the machine, documented the defect with photographs, raised a non-conformance report, and sourced a replacement hose from our parts supplier, completing the repair within four hours. I also flagged the issue in the next toolbox meeting and recommended adding hose condition checks to the weekly pre-hire inspection checklist. Result: The machine was returned to service safely the same day, and the updated checklist caught two similar defects on other units within the following month, preventing two potential failures.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to diagnose a particularly complex fault with limited information — what was your approach?

Situation: A telehandler returned from a long-term site hire with an intermittent power loss fault that the site team could not reproduce consistently. Task: I needed to identify the root cause without a repeatable symptom and with the machine required back on hire within 48 hours. Action: I connected the OEM diagnostic tool and reviewed historical fault codes, cross-referencing them with the service manual. I then ran the machine under load for 90 minutes, monitoring live data on fuel rail pressure and injector timing. I identified a failing fuel pressure regulator that only dropped below threshold under sustained load. Result: I replaced the regulator, retested under load for two hours with no recurrence, and returned the machine to hire on schedule. The repair saved an estimated £1,800 in further downtime costs.
