1Question

Tell me about a time you inspired a reluctant student to engage with drama

I had a Year 9 student who refused to participate in practical work due to confidence issues. I identified their interest in technical theatre and assigned them as lighting designer for our autumn production. Over 6 weeks, I gradually introduced small speaking roles, building their confidence through backstage responsibilities first. They eventually auditioned for the spring play and delivered a memorable performance. Their GCSE Drama grade improved from a predicted D to achieving a B, demonstrating how targeted encouragement and alternative entry points can transform student engagement.
2Question

Describe a challenging production you directed and how you managed it

I directed 'Romeo and Juliet' with 45 students when our main venue became unavailable 3 weeks before opening night. I redesigned the staging for our smaller hall, created a flexible set using modular platforms, and restructured scenes to accommodate the intimate space. I held additional rehearsals focusing on voice projection and blocking adjustments. The production received outstanding feedback from parents and governors, with ticket sales reaching 98% capacity across 4 performances. This experience taught me the importance of adaptability and creative problem-solving under pressure.
