1Question

Tell me about a time you inspired a reluctant student to engage with Art

I had a Year 9 student who claimed he 'hated art' and refused to participate in practical work. I discovered he was interested in skateboarding, so I introduced him to street art and graffiti as legitimate art forms. I arranged for him to create a skateboard deck design project, incorporating typography and graphic elements. Over 6 weeks, his attitude transformed completely. He began staying after class to work on his designs and even entered a piece in the school art exhibition. His final GCSE Art grade was a B, and he continued with A-level Art. This taught me the importance of connecting curriculum content to students' personal interests.
2Question

Describe a challenging classroom situation and how you handled it

During a Year 10 painting lesson, two students had a heated argument that escalated quickly, disrupting the entire class of 28 students. I immediately separated the students and calmly asked the class to continue with their work while I addressed the situation. I spoke to each student individually outside the classroom, allowing them to express their concerns. It turned out the conflict stemmed from sharing art materials. I implemented a new resource management system with clear guidelines and rotating responsibilities. The lesson resumed smoothly, and I followed up with both students the next day. This experience reinforced the importance of clear classroom procedures and proactive conflict resolution.
