STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Describe a time when you had to manage challenging behaviour in an English classroom

During my second year teaching, I had a Year 9 class with 3 particularly disruptive students who would regularly interrupt lessons and distract others during reading activities. I implemented a structured behaviour management system using positive reinforcement tokens that students could earn for engagement and respect. I also created individual learning contracts with the challenging students, setting clear expectations and rewards. Within 4 weeks, classroom disruptions decreased by 60% and the previously disruptive students began participating actively in group discussions. The improved atmosphere allowed the entire class to progress more effectively through their literature unit.
2Question

Tell me about a student whose attainment you helped improve significantly

I worked with Sarah, a Year 10 student who was predicted a Grade 3 in GCSE English Language and struggled particularly with creative writing. I identified that she had strong ideas but lacked structural techniques. I provided her with weekly one-to-one sessions focusing on paragraph structure and vocabulary development, plus gave her access to model answers and writing frameworks. I also encouraged her to join the creative writing club I ran after school. Over 8 months, her coursework improved dramatically and she achieved a Grade 6 in her final GCSE, exceeding her predicted grade by 3 levels. Her confidence in English transformed completely.
