STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you went above and beyond to deliver outstanding patient care.

Situation: An elderly patient came in distressed after her third failed attempt to adapt to varifocal lenses prescribed elsewhere. Task: I needed to identify the root cause and restore her confidence in the dispensing process. Action: I spent 25 minutes conducting a detailed lifestyle assessment, identified that her previous lenses had an unsuitable corridor length for her reading habits, and reordered with a short-corridor design. I also called her two days post-collection to check her adaptation. Result: She adapted successfully within a week and referred two family members to the store within the following month, generating £480 in new sales.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to resolve a difficult customer complaint in a retail optical environment.

Situation: A patient returned four weeks after collection, unhappy that his photochromic lenses were not darkening sufficiently outdoors. Task: I had to investigate whether this was a product fault or an expectation mismatch and resolve it quickly. Action: I reviewed his original dispensing notes, confirmed the lenses met the manufacturer's specification, and demonstrated the activation process in natural light. I then offered a complimentary lens upgrade to a faster-reacting photochromic product as a goodwill gesture. Result: The patient left satisfied, left a five-star Google review the following day, and the store avoided a formal GOC complaint.
