Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Tesco's reputation for putting customers first is exactly the environment in which I thrive, which is why I am applying for the Customer Delivery Driver role at Prescot Extra. I hold a valid full UK driving licence with no penalty points and have hands-on experience conducting vehicle safety checks and managing safe van loads — both skills your advert identifies as central to this position.

My background in customer-facing delivery work has equipped me to handle doorstep interactions with warmth and professionalism, including navigating order substitutions and processing refunds calmly to keep customers satisfied. I am comfortable working independently on the road while staying connected to a base team, and I consistently meet tight time-slot schedules across multiple drops per shift.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult or upset customer and how you resolved it.

Situation: While working as a delivery driver for a grocery retailer, I arrived at a customer's home to find that 4 items in their order had been substituted without prior notice, and the customer was frustrated as two were dietary essentials. Task: I needed to resolve the situation on the doorstep quickly and leave the customer feeling looked after. Action: I calmly explained each substitution, offered an immediate refund on the two unsuitable items via the handheld device, and noted their preferences for the store team. I also stayed an extra two minutes to ensure they were satisfied before leaving. Result: The customer called the store to compliment the handling, and my manager highlighted the feedback in the next team briefing.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected change while working independently.

Situation: Midway through a 30-drop delivery shift, my route app flagged a road closure due to an accident, affecting 8 consecutive deliveries in one postcode. Task: I had to re-sequence those drops independently to avoid missing time slots. Action: I pulled over safely, used the map to identify two alternative approach roads, re-ordered the 8 stops by proximity, and contacted the store to flag a likely 15-minute delay on the final 3 slots. Result: I completed all 30 deliveries within a 20-minute extension to my shift, with no customer complaints recorded and all time slots marked as fulfilled in the system.
