Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

Dear Hiring Manager,

Tesco's reputation for putting customers first is exactly the environment in which I thrive, which is why I am keen to join the Skipton store as a Customer Delivery Driver. I hold a full UK driving licence with under 3 penalty points and over 12 months' clean driving history, and I have direct experience managing doorstep customer interactions, including communicating order substitutions and processing refunds calmly and professionally.

My background in customer-facing delivery roles has equipped me with the ability to complete multi-drop routes to tight time slots while maintaining a warm, natural manner at every doorstep. I understand the importance of pre-drive vehicle checks, safe van loading, and keeping trays and work areas organised so every order arrives in perfect condition.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you delivered excellent customer service under time pressure.

Situation: During a busy Saturday shift at a local grocery delivery company, I had 30 drops to complete in 6 hours due to a colleague calling in sick. Task: I needed to maintain my usual doorstep service quality without cutting corners on customer interaction. Action: I reorganised my route using the onboard system to cluster nearby addresses, reducing dead mileage by roughly 12 minutes. At each door, I still took time to explain two substitutions clearly and offered a refund on one item the customer declined. Result: I completed all 30 deliveries within the time window and received a 5-star customer rating that day, with one customer emailing the depot to commend the service.
2Question

Give an example of when you dealt with a frustrated or upset customer and how you resolved it.

Situation: A customer in Harrogate received her weekly order with three substituted items, including a baby formula brand she specifically needed. Task: I had to manage her concern on the doorstep without escalating the situation or delaying the remaining 14 deliveries. Action: I listened without interrupting, acknowledged the inconvenience, and immediately processed a full refund for the formula via the handheld device. I also noted her preference in the delivery comments for the depot team. Result: The customer thanked me before I left and later gave a positive review mentioning the handling of the issue by name. The depot manager used it as a training example the following week.
