STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you delivered excellent service to a customer who was initially unhappy.

Situation: While working as a delivery driver for a local grocery firm, I arrived at a customer's address to find that 4 items had been substituted without prior notice, and the customer was visibly frustrated. Task: I needed to resolve the situation quickly, maintain the delivery schedule, and leave the customer feeling valued. Action: I calmly explained each substitution, offered a full refund on two items the customer didn't want, and noted their preferences for future orders in the system. I also called the depot to flag the issue for the picking team. Result: The customer thanked me directly and left a 5-star feedback rating. My manager highlighted the interaction in the next team briefing as a model response.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected change while working independently.

Situation: Midway through a 30-stop delivery shift, my sat-nav failed and road closures due to a burst water main blocked two of my planned routes in the town centre. Task: I had to reroute independently and still meet 14 remaining time slot deliveries within a 90-minute window. Action: I used my knowledge of the local area to identify alternative roads, prioritised the most time-sensitive deliveries first, and contacted the base team to notify 3 customers of a short delay. Result: I completed all 14 deliveries within 20 minutes of the original slots, and only 1 customer required a re-booking, which was resolved the same afternoon.
