STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you delivered excellent customer service in a challenging situation.

Situation: During a busy Saturday evening shift, I arrived at a customer's address to find that 6 of their 20 items had been substituted due to stock shortages, including a key item for a birthday celebration. Task: I needed to explain the changes clearly and keep the customer satisfied without causing frustration. Action: I calmly walked the customer through each substitution, explained the reasons, offered a full refund on the items they did not want, and flagged their feedback to the store team on my return. Result: The customer thanked me directly and left a positive comment via the Tesco feedback system, which my manager shared with the team the following week.
2Question

Describe a time you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected change while working independently.

Situation: Midway through a delivery route covering 22 drops, my route planner app lost signal in a rural area, leaving me without navigation for 4 consecutive addresses. Task: I had to complete the deliveries on time without missing any customer slots. Action: I pulled over safely, used a paper map in the van and recalled the general area from a previous shift, re-sequencing 3 of the stops to minimise backtracking. Result: I completed all 22 deliveries within the scheduled window, arriving no more than 4 minutes late to any single address, and reported the signal blackspot to the depot team to update future route planning.
