STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you dealt with an unhappy customer and how you resolved the situation

A customer was upset because 3 items in their £85 grocery order were substituted without prior notice. I listened to their concerns, apologised for the inconvenience, and explained each substitution was a similar product at the same or lower price. I offered immediate refunds for the unwanted items totalling £12 and provided my manager's contact details for further feedback. The customer appreciated my honesty and patience, accepting the substitutions and thanking me for the professional service. This taught me that clear communication and empathy can turn negative experiences into positive customer relationships.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to work independently for long periods - how did you stay motivated?

During a 9-hour delivery shift covering 45 rural addresses, I worked alone for most of the day with only radio contact to base. I stayed motivated by setting mini-goals for each delivery cluster, celebrating small wins like completing difficult-to-find addresses ahead of schedule. I used the quiet driving time between stops to plan my next 3-4 deliveries and mentally prepare for customer interactions. By the end of the shift, I had completed all 45 deliveries with 2 customer compliments, proving that self-motivation and structured planning help maintain high performance even when working independently.
