Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Highlight your valid UK driving licence prominently at the top of your CV under a 'Key Credentials' section, as the advert lists it as the sole hard requirement.

2

📊 Quantify your delivery experience: e.g. 'Completed 25+ doorstep deliveries per shift with a 98% on-time rate across a 6-month contract'.

3

🎯 Tailor your personal statement to mention customer-facing doorstep service specifically, as Tesco emphasises 'the face of Tesco on the road' — not just driving.

4

🤝 Include any experience handling complaints, substitutions, or order discrepancies, as the advert explicitly calls out communicating changes and processing refunds.

5

🚐 Note any experience with vehicle checks, loading procedures, or fleet compliance, as the advert requires van safety checks before every shift.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you delivered excellent service to a customer who was initially unhappy.

Situation: While working as a delivery driver for a local food wholesaler, I arrived at a customer's address to find that 3 of their 18 items had been substituted without prior notice. The customer was frustrated as one substitution was a key ingredient for a catering order that evening. Task: I needed to resolve the issue quickly and leave the customer feeling supported rather than let down. Action: I calmly explained each substitution, offered an immediate refund on the two items they didn't want, and contacted my depot to arrange a priority re-delivery of the correct product within two hours. Result: The customer received the correct item before their catering deadline and left a five-star review mentioning me by name. The depot manager used the interaction as a training example for the wider team.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected change while working independently.

Situation: Midway through a 26-drop delivery shift, my route planning app lost signal in a rural area of Shropshire, leaving me without navigation for 11 remaining drops. Task: I had to complete the remaining deliveries on time using only a printed manifest and my knowledge of the local road layout. Action: I pulled over safely, reorganised the remaining drops by postcode district using the paper manifest, and used landmark-based navigation I had built up over 6 months on the route. I also called ahead to two customers with tight time slots to manage their expectations. Result: I completed all 26 drops with only one delivery running 8 minutes late, and both pre-warned customers confirmed they were satisfied with the communication.
