STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Describe a situation where you had to deliver difficult news to a customer — how did you handle it?

Situation: While working as a delivery driver for a local grocery firm, I arrived at a customer's address to find that 4 items in their order had been substituted due to stock issues, including a key item they had specifically requested. Task: I needed to inform the customer clearly and professionally without causing frustration. Action: I calmly explained each substitution at the doorstep, offered a full refund on the two items they did not want, and noted their preferences on the delivery log for future orders. I also apologised sincerely and thanked them for their patience. Result: The customer left positive feedback on the company's review platform that week, and my manager highlighted the interaction as a best-practice example at the next team briefing.
2Question

Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected change while working independently.

Situation: Midway through a 20-drop delivery shift, my planned route was blocked due to an unplanned road closure near the town centre. Task: I had 11 remaining deliveries and 3 customers in the affected area whose time slots were within the next 45 minutes. Action: I immediately re-ordered my remaining drops using the onboard sat-nav, prioritised the closest time-sensitive customers, and called back to base to flag the delay for two customers who would need their slots extended. Result: I completed all 20 deliveries within 18 minutes of the original finish time, and none of the affected customers raised a complaint — two actually commented positively on being kept informed.
