STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult or upset customer — how did you handle it?

Situation: While working as a delivery driver for a local food retailer, I arrived at a customer's home to find that 4 items in their order had been substituted without prior notice. The customer was frustrated and felt the replacements were unsuitable. Task: I needed to resolve the situation quickly, maintain the customer's trust, and process a refund on the spot. Action: I calmly walked the customer through each substitution, explained the reason for the change, and immediately processed refunds for the 2 items they declined. I also noted their preferences for future orders. Result: The customer thanked me before I left and later left a positive feedback comment, which was shared with my manager the following week.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to an unexpected change while working independently.

Situation: Midway through an evening delivery shift covering 22 drops, my sat-nav failed and I lost access to the optimised route. Task: I had to complete the remaining 14 deliveries within the customers' booked time slots without digital navigation support. Action: I pulled over safely, used my knowledge of the local area and a paper map in the van to re-plan the most efficient sequence of drops, and contacted base to flag a 10-minute delay on two slots. Result: I completed all 14 deliveries within 18 minutes of the original schedule, and both flagged customers confirmed they were happy with the updated arrival time.
