About the role

  • Overtime opportunities also available
  • Fully funded CPC training hours provided

As an 18 tonne driver at Makro you will be working for the UK's largest wholesaler. We have a growing delivery operation with over 100 employees on site. So a driving role here means that you will be part of a business that offers "wheel" stability and one of the most competitive salaries right here on your doorstep.

What is in it for you

At Booker, along with being a great place to work and giving you an opportunity to get on in your career, we also offer the following fantastic package of benefits:

  • A Booker colleague card with 10% off purchases at Booker and double discount events up to three times a year.
  • After 3 months service, a Tesco colleague discount card with 10% increasing to 15% off most purchases at Tesco for a 4 day period after every four-weekly pay day, ie. thirteen times a year. In addition to 10% off at Tesco Cafe and 20% off all F&F purchases.
  • 10% off pay monthly & SIM only deals with Tesco Mobile for yourself, along with further great deals through-out the year.
  • Up to 30% off car, pet and home insurance at Tesco bank. Terms and conditions apply.
  • Free eye test when you spend £50 or more. You can also save 30% when you spend £50 or more on glasses, prescription sunglasses and contact lenses.
  • 50% off health checks at Tesco Pharmacy.
  • Exclusive access to discounted RAC breakdown cover rates
  • An exclusive deals and discounts website saving you money on everyday purchases including a cycle to work scheme.
  • After 3 months service, you can join our annual Save As You Earn share scheme which allows you to buy Tesco shares in the future at a discount.
  • Retirement savings plan (pension) - save up to 5% and Booker will match your contribution.
  • Life Assurance - You are covered for death in service life cover of up to three times annual pay
  • Health and Wellbeing support and resources including our 24/7, confidential Employee Assistance Programme and Virtual GP for you and your family.
  • A great holiday package

You will be responsible for

Making up to 15 deliveries a day to our wonderful local customers. Our lorries are temperature controlled so you too can be a "chilled out" driver even when the manual handling will get you working up a sweat.
Our drivers are the heart of our business so the work can be hard and it isn't for the feint-hearted. But you will have a regular routine, time on your own and a radio to sing your heart out too while you are:
Delivering up to 15 drops a day
Getting on with the job without supervision
Putting a smile on the face of our customers.
What more could you want?

You will need

A Cat C/ 18T licence having driven for at least two years.

Experience of multi-drops would be preferable but not essential, as you will get 15 opportunities a day to "brake" you in.

A DQC card is a must as we drive a professional operation.

To be in good physical shape as the work can be demanding but don't worry we won't exhaust you.

Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Place your Cat C licence and DQC card prominently in your CV header or skills section — the advert lists both as hard requirements.

2

📊 Quantify your delivery experience: e.g. 'Completed 12–15 multi-drop deliveries daily across Greater Manchester, maintaining 98% on-time rate'.

3

🚛 Highlight any multi-drop experience explicitly, even if brief — the advert flags it as preferable and it will differentiate your application.

4

🎯 Mention experience with temperature-controlled or refrigerated vehicles if applicable, as Makro's fleet is specifically temperature-controlled.

5

🤝 Note any unsupervised or sole-charge driving roles in your history — the advert emphasises working independently without supervision as a key part of the role.

Letter preview — tailored to Tesco

Dear Hiring Manager,

Makro's wholesale delivery operation — handling up to 15 multi-drop runs daily from your Manchester site — is precisely the kind of structured, high-volume driving role I have been seeking. I hold a valid Cat C licence with over two years' driving experience and carry a current DQC card, meeting your two core requirements from day one.

My background in multi-drop delivery has equipped me with strong route awareness, safe manual handling practice, and the ability to work independently without supervision across a full shift. I have experience operating temperature-controlled vehicles and consistently achieving on-time delivery targets across dense urban routes.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to complete a high volume of deliveries under time pressure — how did you manage it?

Situation: During a pre-Christmas peak week at my previous employer, our depot was short-staffed and I was assigned 14 drops instead of the usual 10, covering an extended route into Salford and Stretford. Task: I needed to complete all deliveries within the standard 9-hour shift without compromising safe driving or customer service. Action: I reviewed the route the night before, reordered stops to cut backtracking by roughly 8 miles, and communicated estimated arrival windows to two customers who had restricted unloading times. Result: I completed all 14 drops 25 minutes inside the shift window, received positive feedback from the depot manager, and had no customer complaints logged that week.
2Question

Describe a situation where a customer was unhappy with a delivery. How did you handle it?

Situation: On a morning run delivering chilled goods to a convenience store in Oldham, the store manager disputed the quantity of a dairy pallet, claiming two crates were missing from the manifest. Task: I needed to resolve the dispute on the spot, keep the delivery schedule on track, and ensure accurate records were maintained. Action: I calmly walked through the signed delivery note with the manager, cross-referenced the load against the manifest, and photographed the pallet before and after offloading. I escalated the discrepancy to the depot via radio immediately. Result: The depot confirmed a picking error on their side, arranged a same-day top-up delivery, and the customer's complaint was resolved within three hours. I was commended by the transport supervisor for handling it professionally.
