STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage a difficult customer during a delivery and how you handled it.

Situation: On a regular wholesale route in Leeds, a café owner refused a delivery claiming 4 boxes of stock were missing from the manifest. Task: I needed to resolve the dispute calmly, maintain the relationship, and ensure accurate records were kept. Action: I walked through the signed manifest with the customer item by item, identified that two boxes had been loaded on a separate pallet and were at the rear of the vehicle. I retrieved them immediately and apologised for the confusion. I also flagged the loading error to the depot supervisor on return. Result: The customer was satisfied, signed off the full delivery, and remained on my regular route for the following 18 months without further issues.
2Question

Describe a situation where you were running behind schedule on your delivery route. What did you do?

Situation: During a busy Friday shift, a road closure added 40 minutes to my route, putting 6 remaining deliveries at risk of being late. Task: I needed to complete all drops within the agreed customer windows without compromising safety. Action: I contacted the depot controller immediately, who notified the two furthest customers of a revised ETA. I reprioritised the remaining stops by proximity, skipping a planned break to recover 20 minutes. I drove within speed limits throughout and completed all paperwork at each stop. Result: All 6 deliveries were completed within 15 minutes of the revised windows, and no customer complaints were logged. The depot manager noted the proactive communication in my next review.
