STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult customer during a delivery and how you handled it.

Situation: A regular wholesale customer at a busy café disputed the quantity of a delivery, insisting three cases of cooking oil were missing from their order. Task: I needed to resolve the issue quickly without delaying my remaining six drops on the route. Action: I calmly walked through the signed delivery manifest with the customer, cross-referenced the load sheet I had completed at the depot, and confirmed the three cases had been loaded and delivered. I contacted my depot supervisor immediately to flag the discrepancy and arrange an investigation. Result: The issue was traced to a stock count error at the customer's end. The customer apologised and I completed the rest of my route on time, maintaining a positive relationship with that account.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt your delivery schedule at short notice — what did you do?

Situation: Midway through a 15-drop shift, I received a call that a major road closure had blocked my planned route to four customers in the same postcode area. Task: I had to reroute on the spot without missing any deliveries or exceeding my shift window. Action: I pulled over safely, used my in-cab navigation to identify an alternative route, and called ahead to two time-sensitive customers to update their estimated arrival times. I reordered my remaining drops to minimise mileage on the new route. Result: All 15 deliveries were completed within the original shift window, and both customers I had called thanked me for the advance notice, which reinforced their confidence in the service.
