Application advice

5 AI-generated recommendations to maximise your chances.

1

⭐ Place your Cat C / 18T licence and CPC card prominently in your CV header or personal statement, as these are the first eligibility check the recruiter will apply.

📊 Quantify your driving experience: e.g. 'Completed 25+ daily drops across North Yorkshire, covering 180 miles per shift with zero late deliveries over 18 months'.

3

🎯 Highlight any food, drink, or wholesale delivery background — Booker explicitly serves independent retailers and caterers, so sector-relevant experience will stand out.

4

🤝 Include a specific example of building repeat customer relationships on a regular delivery route, as the advert calls this out as a key part of the role.

5

📋 Mention accuracy in delivery paperwork and any experience with handheld POD (proof of delivery) devices, as documentation accuracy is listed as a direct responsibility.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you went above and beyond to ensure a customer received their delivery on time.

Situation: During a busy Friday run covering 22 drops across Scarborough and Filey, my vehicle developed a slow tyre puncture at drop 14. Task: I needed to complete the remaining 8 deliveries, including a time-sensitive order for a fish and chip shop opening at 11:30am. Action: I contacted the depot immediately, arranged for a replacement tyre to be fitted at a nearby garage within 40 minutes, and called ahead to the remaining customers with revised ETAs. Result: All 8 remaining deliveries were completed within 25 minutes of the original schedule, and the fish and chip shop received their stock before opening. The depot manager noted the incident in my performance review as an example of strong problem-solving under pressure.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to deal with a difficult or unhappy customer at a delivery point.

Situation: A regular off-licence customer in Whitby received a delivery where two cases of wine had been damaged in transit — not caused by my handling, but discovered on unloading. Task: I needed to resolve the situation professionally without escalating the customer's frustration. Action: I acknowledged the issue immediately, photographed the damaged stock, completed a full discrepancy note on the delivery paperwork, and called the depot to raise a replacement order while still on site. I also offered to restack the undamaged stock in the customer's storeroom. Result: The replacement order was dispatched the same afternoon, and the customer specifically mentioned the handling of the situation positively in feedback to the depot manager the following week.
