STAR answer examples

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to work independently on a project from start to finish

I was assigned to manage a bridge refurbishment project in West Yorkshire worth £850,000. The situation required complete project ownership from initial site survey through to final handover. I developed the project timeline, coordinated with 4 specialist contractors, and maintained weekly progress reports for the client. My action involved creating detailed setting out plans, conducting daily quality checks, and resolving technical issues as they arose. The result was project completion 10 days ahead of schedule with zero safety incidents and client satisfaction rating of 98%.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to liaise with difficult clients or stakeholders

During a flood defence project, the local council expressed concerns about our proposed methodology affecting nearby residential access. The task was to maintain project momentum while addressing their valid concerns. I organised site meetings with all stakeholders, prepared visual presentations showing our approach, and developed alternative access routes during construction phases. My actions included daily progress updates and proactive communication about any changes. This resulted in gaining full stakeholder buy-in, completing the £1.2M project on time, and receiving commendation from the council for exceptional communication.
