1Question

Tell me about a time you had to manage a difficult team member on site

During a 6-week drainage project in Norfolk, one experienced groundworker consistently arrived late and questioned safety procedures. I arranged a private conversation to understand his concerns, discovering he felt his 15 years' experience wasn't being recognised. I assigned him as lead on the complex storm drainage section while maintaining clear expectations about punctuality and safety compliance. This approach improved his engagement and he became a valuable mentor for junior team members, helping us complete the project 3 days early with zero safety incidents.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to solve an unexpected problem during groundworks

While excavating foundations for a commercial development, we discovered an unmarked water main 800mm below the planned depth. I immediately stopped work and contacted the utilities company, then redesigned the foundation layout with the site engineer to work around the pipe. By splitting the pour into two phases and adjusting the reinforcement schedule, we avoided a 2-week delay and £12,000 in additional costs. The client praised our proactive problem-solving approach and awarded us the follow-up phase.
