1Question

Tell me about a time you showed compassion to someone in your care

An 82-year-old resident with dementia became distressed during meal times, refusing to eat for 3 days. I noticed she responded well to music from her era, so I arranged for 1940s songs to play during meals and sat with her for 30 minutes each time. I discovered she had been a dance teacher, so I incorporated gentle hand movements that mimicked dancing. Within a week, she was eating full meals again and her family noticed a significant improvement in her mood. This experience reinforced how taking time to understand each person's individual needs and background can transform their care experience.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to communicate difficult news to a resident or family member

A resident's mobility had declined significantly, and we needed to discuss moving from a walking frame to a wheelchair. I arranged a meeting with the resident and her daughter, ensuring privacy and adequate time. I explained the medical assessment findings clearly, emphasising safety concerns while acknowledging how difficult this change would be. I focused on maintaining her independence in other areas and arranged for physiotherapy to help with the transition. The daughter was initially upset, but by presenting options and involving them in the care plan decisions, we reached an agreement that prioritised safety while preserving dignity. The resident adapted well to the wheelchair within 2 weeks.
