STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you showed compassion to someone in your care

An elderly resident with dementia became very distressed during personal care, repeatedly asking for her mother. Rather than rushing through the task, I sat with her for 10 minutes, holding her hand and listening to stories about her childhood. I then gently explained each step of the care process, using her mother's name as a comfort reference. This approach reduced her anxiety significantly, and she began to trust me with her daily care routine. The family later thanked me for the patience I showed, and the resident's wellbeing scores improved over the following month.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt your approach with a difficult resident

A resident with mobility issues became increasingly resistant to using his walking frame, insisting he could manage alone despite recent falls. Instead of insisting on the frame, I spent time understanding his concerns about appearing weak. I suggested we practice together in his room first, then gradually moved to short walks in the corridor. I also arranged for him to mentor a newer resident who was learning to use mobility aids. This gave him purpose and pride while maintaining his safety. Within 3 weeks, he was using his frame confidently and had become a positive influence on other residents.
