STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you successfully de-escalated a challenging behaviour situation

A Year 4 pupil with autism became extremely agitated during a maths lesson, throwing equipment and shouting. I immediately implemented Team-Teach de-escalation techniques, speaking calmly and giving him space whilst removing other pupils safely. I used his special interest in trains to redirect his attention, asking him to count carriages on a toy train. Within 8 minutes, he was calm and ready to return to modified maths activities. This approach prevented a full meltdown and kept him in class rather than requiring removal.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt your approach quickly with a SEND pupil

During a literacy session, a Year 3 pupil with ADHD became frustrated with handwriting tasks and started disrupting others. I quickly recognised his need for movement breaks and adapted by introducing a standing desk option and fidget tools. I broke his 20-minute writing task into 4 five-minute segments with movement breaks between. This adaptation resulted in him completing 95% of the work compared to his usual 30%, and he remained engaged throughout the 45-minute session.
