STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a vulnerable child overcome a significant challenge

A 9-year-old pupil with Autism was struggling with classroom transitions, becoming distressed and disrupting lessons. I implemented a visual schedule system and practiced transition routines during quiet periods. Over 4 weeks, I gradually reduced the visual prompts while maintaining consistent verbal cues. The result was a 90% reduction in transition-related meltdowns and the pupil began participating more confidently in group activities, improving their overall classroom experience significantly.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt your approach for a child's individual needs

I was supporting a 13-year-old with ADHD who couldn't focus during traditional seated activities. I noticed they responded better to movement-based learning, so I adapted my support to include fidget tools, standing desk options, and short movement breaks every 15 minutes. I also broke tasks into 5-minute chunks with clear visual goals. This approach increased their task completion from 30% to 85% and reduced disruptive behaviour, allowing them to engage more effectively with the curriculum.
