A bit about us

Sim Trava was formed in 2005 by Simon and Tracy Vardy from the basement of their Altrincham home, and their first store opened that same year on October 17th in Northwich, Cheshire. The original plan was to open 5 stores in 5 years, however that milestone was achieved much sooner and by 2010 we had 10 Costa Coffee stores in and around the Cheshire/Manchester area.

Fast forward to 2021 when we celebrated our 40th new store opening in Fallowfield, Manchester. Following this Sim Trava was honoured to be selected to be the first franchise to purchase existing stores from equity. We acquired 17 stores, located across the Preston, Blackpool, and Southport region. In 2025 Sim Trava expanded again with the purchase of 21 existing stores from a franchise partner bringing our store count to 80, and we have no plans to slow down.

For any reasonable adjustments and general queries please

*This role is for a store owned by one of our franchise partners, their hiring process, salary and benefits may vary from those within a wholly owned Costa store advert.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you delivered excellent customer service under significant pressure.

Situation: During a Saturday morning rush at a busy café, two team members called in sick, leaving just three of us to cover the counter. Task: I needed to maintain drink quality and keep queue times acceptable while also supporting a new colleague. Action: I reorganised our station workflow, took ownership of all espresso pulls, and coached my colleague on milk steaming in real time between orders. I also greeted each customer by name where possible to ease frustration. Result: We cleared a 15-person queue in under 12 minutes, and three customers specifically praised the service on the feedback card that day — one of our highest single-day scores that month.
2Question

Describe a moment when you helped build a positive team atmosphere at work.

Situation: After a difficult inspection flagged minor cleanliness issues at our store, team morale dipped noticeably and communication between shifts became strained. Task: As a senior team member, I wanted to rebuild confidence and re-establish shared ownership of standards. Action: I proposed a brief 5-minute handover huddle at each shift change, introduced a shared cleaning checklist visible to all staff, and started recognising colleagues publicly on our team group chat when they went above and beyond. Result: Within 6 weeks, our next internal audit scored 94 out of 100, and our shift manager noted a measurable improvement in team communication and punctuality.
