STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to de-escalate a confrontational situation with a tenant

A tenant became aggressive during a home visit regarding noise complaints from neighbours, shouting and threatening to involve solicitors. I remained calm, acknowledged their frustration, and asked to hear their perspective first. I discovered they felt unfairly targeted due to their shift work schedule. I explained the complaint process clearly, offered practical solutions like carpet installation, and arranged a three-way meeting with the complainant. This approach reduced tensions, led to a mutual agreement on quiet hours, and prevented formal enforcement action while maintaining positive relationships with both parties.
2Question

Describe a complex ASB case you managed from start to finish

I managed a case involving drug dealing allegations affecting 8 neighbouring households over 6 months. I conducted detailed interviews with witnesses, coordinated with police intelligence, and gathered evidence including CCTV footage and incident logs. The investigation revealed the tenant's son was involved, not the tenant directly. I worked with social services due to child safeguarding concerns, arranged drug awareness support, and negotiated a behaviour agreement rather than eviction. The case resolved successfully with no further incidents, the family received appropriate support, and community confidence was restored through regular updates to affected residents.
