STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a child with challenging behaviour engage positively with learning

Situation: I worked with a 9-year-old LAC pupil who was refusing to participate in maths lessons and becoming aggressive when approached. Task: I needed to help him engage with numeracy whilst addressing his trauma responses. Action: I introduced a sensory break system and used his interest in cars to create maths problems about racing speeds and distances. I also established a calm-down corner where he could regulate before rejoining activities. Result: Within 6 weeks, his maths participation increased from 20% to 85%, and aggressive incidents dropped from daily to once weekly.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt your communication style for a traumatised child

Situation: A 12-year-old girl with ACE would shut down completely when given direct instructions, often triggered by authoritative voices. Task: I needed to find a way to guide her learning without causing trauma responses. Action: I switched to collaborative language, asking 'What do you think we should try next?' instead of 'You need to do this.' I also used visual cues and gave her choices between two options rather than open-ended decisions. Result: Her participation in group activities increased from 30% to 75% over 8 weeks, and she began initiating conversations about her learning goals.
