STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you helped a struggling pupil achieve a breakthrough

Situation: I was supporting a Year 3 pupil with ASD who was struggling with reading comprehension and becoming increasingly frustrated during literacy lessons. Task: I needed to find an approach that would engage him while building his confidence and skills. Action: I created visual story maps using his special interest in trains, breaking down comprehension questions into smaller, manageable chunks. I also introduced a reward system where he earned train stickers for each completed task. Result: Within 6 weeks, his reading comprehension improved by 18 months, and he began volunteering answers in class discussions for the first time.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to adapt quickly to support different year groups

Situation: During a staff shortage, I was asked to support both Year 1 phonics and Year 5 maths in the same morning, covering very different learning needs. Task: I needed to quickly adjust my approach and materials to suit each age group effectively. Action: I prepared simplified visual aids for Year 1 phonics using actions and songs, then switched to more complex problem-solving strategies for Year 5 maths, using real-world examples they could relate to. I also adjusted my language and expectations accordingly. Result: Both sessions ran smoothly, with Year 1 pupils achieving 92% accuracy in their phonics assessment and Year 5 students completing their fraction work ahead of schedule.
