With a Category C+E licence and hands-on experience of vehicle shunting within controlled depot environments, I am confident in my ability to maintain safe traffic flow, operate weighbridge systems accurately, and uphold Duty of Care record-keeping standards from day one.

My background in waste management and depot operations has given me a thorough grounding in health and safety legislation, risk assessments, and environmental permit compliance. I have routinely conducted pre-use vehicle safety checks, reported defects through formal fleet procedures, and supported site housekeeping to a high standard across busy operational sites.

STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you identified a safety hazard in a yard or depot environment and what action you took.

Situation: During a morning shunting shift at a waste transfer depot in Preston, I noticed a leaking hydraulic line on a refuse vehicle parked near a pedestrian walkway, creating a slip hazard. Task: As the first person on site to spot it, I needed to act quickly before the morning vehicle movements began. Action: I immediately cordoned off a 3-metre exclusion zone using cones, reported the defect via the Council's fleet procedure form, and notified the shift supervisor before any further vehicles entered that bay. I also redirected two incoming HGVs to an alternative loading area. Result: The vehicle was taken out of service within 20 minutes, the spill was contained, and no injuries or near misses were recorded. The supervisor cited the response as an example in the next team safety briefing.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to resolve a discrepancy in vehicle or weighbridge records with a driver or supervisor.

Situation: While operating the weighbridge at a waste transfer station, I noticed a 400kg discrepancy between a driver's declared load weight and the recorded weighbridge reading for a mixed waste consignment. Task: I needed to resolve the issue accurately without delaying the site's outbound schedule, which had 12 vehicles queued. Action: I cross-referenced the inbound ticket against the electronic log, identified that the driver had declared the tare weight of a different vehicle by error, and calmly walked him through the correct figures. I reissued the weighbridge ticket with the accurate data and flagged the anomaly to the supervisor with a written note. Result: The record was corrected within 10 minutes, the queue cleared on schedule, and the incident was logged as a procedural learning point rather than a compliance breach.
