We are recruiting on behalf of a leading machine tool and advanced manufacturing business seeking an experienced Service Engineer to support the installation, servicing, maintenance, and repair of high-performance 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machining centres across the UK and, where required, internationally.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technically capable engineer with strong CNC knowledge to join a growing organisation working with cutting-edge machining technology across aerospace, automotive, medical, precision engineering, and manufacturing environments.

The Role

  • Install, commission, and service 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machining centres at customer sites
  • Carry out preventative maintenance and breakdown support on CNC machine tools
  • Diagnose electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and software faults efficiently
  • Support machine alignments, calibrations, spindle checks, and geometric accuracy testing
  • Provide technical support and training to customers when required
  • Complete detailed service reports and documentation following each visit
  • Work closely with internal technical support and engineering teams
  • Support machine upgrades, retrofits, and automation integration projects
  • Ensure all work is completed in line with health & safety standards and customer expectations
  • Travel throughout the UK and internationally as required

The Ideal Candidate

  • Previous experience working as a CNC Service Engineer, Maintenance Engineer, Field Service Engineer, or similar
  • Strong understanding of CNC machining centres, particularly 3-axis and 5-axis machines
  • Ability to fault-find across electrical and mechanical systems
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation
  • Excellent customer-facing and communication skills
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Passport and willingness to travel internationally

1Question

Describe a time when you had to explain complex technical issues to a non-technical customer

A pharmaceutical client's 5-axis machine was producing parts 0.02mm out of tolerance, threatening their £180,000 batch. The production manager wasn't technical but needed to understand the issue urgently. I used simple analogies, comparing the spindle drift to a wobbly bicycle wheel, and showed visual comparisons of good versus bad parts. I explained that recalibrating the geometric accuracy would take 4 hours but prevent future batches failing. The client approved the work immediately, and we saved their production schedule while building trust through clear communication.
2Question

Tell me about a challenging breakdown situation you resolved under pressure

An aerospace client's 5-axis machine failed during a critical Ministry of Defence contract, with £45,000 in penalties per day of delay. The hydraulic system had multiple fault codes, and initial diagnosis suggested a complete pump replacement requiring 3 days. Under pressure, I systematically tested each circuit and discovered contaminated fluid was triggering false sensor readings. I flushed the system, replaced filters, and recalibrated sensors within 8 hours. The machine returned to full production, saving the client £135,000 in penalties and securing future service contracts.
