STAR answer examples

Model answers using the Situation-Task-Action-Result framework. Adapt to your own experience.

1Question

Tell me about a time you had to diagnose a difficult technical problem

During my placement, I encountered a machine tool that was experiencing intermittent hydraulic pressure drops affecting production quality. The situation required immediate attention as it was costing the client £2,400 per day in downtime. I systematically checked the hydraulic circuit using engineering drawings, testing pressure at 8 different points. My action involved isolating each component and discovered a faulty pressure relief valve that was opening prematurely. I replaced the valve and recalibrated the system pressure to 180 bar. The result was immediate restoration of full production capacity and the client reported no further issues over the following 6 months.
2Question

Describe a situation where you had to train a customer on complex equipment

I was tasked with training a production team of 12 operators on a new CNC machine tool following installation. The situation was challenging as the operators had varying levels of technical experience and the equipment had advanced safety features they weren't familiar with. I developed a structured training programme covering operation procedures, maintenance requirements, and safety protocols over 3 days. My approach included hands-on demonstrations, written guides, and competency assessments for each operator. The result was 100% pass rate on safety certification and the customer reported 40% improvement in operational efficiency within the first month.
